Redefining Success: How to slow down to get ahead

In today’s fast-paced world, it’s like we're all in a race where the finish line keeps moving every time we get close. It's like trying to win a marathon while juggling flaming torches and singing the national anthem backward. We push ourselves relentlessly, chasing success, growth, and recognition—but why and at what cost?

Maybe it's time to sit back, relax, and enjoy a nice cup of tea while the world wonders where we disappeared to. Does the mere thought of taking a break make you cringe? Hmmm.....

Hustle culture tells us that to achieve our dreams, we need to sacrifice rest, time with loved ones, and even our health. But there’s another way: slow living. Slow living doesn’t mean abandoning your goals or giving up on your ambitions.

In fact, it’s about finding a rhythm that allows you to pursue your dreams without burning out in the process. It’s about striving while staying grounded. So how can we incorporate slow living into our lives without compromising on what we want to achieve?

Here are a few ways to find harmony, learn to chill, and have some fun.

1. Redefine Success

One of the biggest traps of hustle culture is chasing someone else’s version of success. Slow living invites us to pause and reflect: What does success actually mean to me? Is it about reaching a certain income, title, or level of recognition, or is it about creating a life that feels meaningful, joyful, and balanced? What if you measured success by setting goals such as: more freedom, more leisure time, or more autonomy? When we redefine success on our own terms, we can pursue our goals with more clarity and purpose — without feeling like we need to run ourselves into the ground.

2.  Press Pause: The value of REST

In hustle culture, rest often feels like something we have to earn. We often feel like we have to be constantly moving forward to be successful. But in a life that embraces slow living, rest is a non-negotiable part of the day. It’s about weaving moments of rest, recovery, and stillness into your daily routine so that you’re not just pausing when you’re already burnt out. Taking intentional pauses allows us to assess our progress, adjust our goals, and make sure we’re still moving in the right direction. Whether it’s taking a weekend off to recharge or stepping away from a project to gain fresh perspective, these pauses are not interruptions—they are essential to achieving with intention. In my bestselling book What Are We Doing?! Radical Self-care for the Hustle Culture, readers learn the Press Pause Method in detail. This could look like scheduling regular breaks during your workday, practicing mindfulness, or simply giving yourself permission to sit and breathe for a few moments without feeling guilty. Rest isn’t a distraction from productivity—it’s what allows us to sustain our energy and focus over the long haul.

3. Set Boundaries with Your Time and Energy  Striving doesn’t have to mean saying “yes” to everything. One of the most powerful principles of slow living is learning how to set boundaries with your time and energy. It’s about the importance of identifying what truly matters to you and protecting your time for those priorities. This might mean saying “no” to opportunities that don’t align with your values, delegating tasks that drain you, or scheduling focused work time without distractions. Setting boundaries doesn’t slow your progress; it helps you channel your energy into the things that matter most.

4. Quality Over Quantity The hustle mindset pushes us to produce as much as possible, but slow living is about focusing on the quality of our work, not just the quantity. It’s about slowing down enough to give thoughtful attention to the projects and tasks that truly matter.

When we focus on doing fewer things but doing them well, we can create more meaningful, lasting impact. By prioritizing quality over quantity, you’ll find that you achieve deeper, more fulfilling progress toward your goals without the constant feeling of being rushed or overwhelmed.

5. Create Space for Joy

Remember fun? One of the most overlooked aspects of striving is the journey itself. We’re so focused on the end goal that we often forget to enjoy the process. Slow living is about finding joy, fulfillment, and presence in each step along the way. It’s about slowing down enough to savor your wins, big or small, and creating space for the things that bring you happiness outside of work and ambition. Whether it’s spending time with loved ones, engaging in a hobby, or simply appreciating a quiet moment, integrating joy into your daily life makes the journey toward your goals far more rewarding. Striving with Purpose, Not Pressure  Slow living isn’t about abandoning ambition—it’s about reshaping how we pursue it. By incorporating the principles of slow living into your daily life, you can continue to strive, achieve, and grow without falling into the traps of hustle culture. It’s about striving with purpose and intention, rather than pressure and burnout. When we embrace slow living, we’re not just creating space for rest and reflection—we’re creating a path to achieve our goals in a way that is sustainable, fulfilling, and aligned with what truly matters.
